Heuristics, Asymptotics and Distribution Questions for Function Fields

From SIAG-AG

Jump to: navigation, search

There are many important distribution questions associated to function fields. Examples include the asymptotic count of the number of function field extensions of some given degree of genus up to some fixed bound, or of a given class number. Other questions relate to the distribution of the zeros of the zeta function of certain families of function fields. While proofs for some problems of this nature exist, rigorous arguments oftentimes turn out to be extremely difficult, in which case researchers must resort to heuristics and possibly numerical computations.
