1. A message from SIAG/IS chair

Dear Colleagues,

Belated Happy New Year to you and your family!

As of 12/31/2014, the SIAG/IS has 472 members (326 non-students; 146 students), which declined from 559 members on 12/31/2013 (326 non-students; 233 students). As you can see, the decline was solely due to that of the student memberships. According to Susan Whitehouse (Membership Manager of SIAM), "We changed our computer data base system in 2011, and set up student memberships in a different way, which I think it has had an impact on their joining SIAGs. We have seen a similar drop in free SIAG memberships across almost all activity groups. We’re working to clarify to students how to join the activity groups for free."

We would like to reverse this trend and ask you for suggestions. Also, please widely announce the newly established "SIAG Imaging Science Early Career Award" to your students as well as your institutions. More about that award later.

Your active participation in the following activities is what will keep SIAG/IS stronger, so please help us by doing so!

* Nominate excellent papers for the biennial SIAG/IS Prize
* Nominate excellent young IS scientists for the SIAG/IS Early Career Award.
* Submit your nice research images for an "Image of the Month" competition to be
  posted on our website: http://wiki.siam.org/siag-is/index.php/Main_Page#Featured_Image
* Participate in the Biennial SIAM Imaging Science Conference by
   - Organizing minisymposia;
   - Proposing minitutorials;
   - Submitting contributed talks.
* Participate in the business meeting that is usually held in the evening of
  the second or third day of the SIAG/IS conference
* Submit useful information for the SIAG/IS members via sending a message to
  siam-imaging@siam.org. Job openings, conference and short-course
  announcements, recent book publications and PhD thesis announcements are
  welcome along with other items of interest to the entire SIAM imaging
  community.
* Submit your ideas to improve our SIAG/IS page: http://wiki.siam.org/siag-is .
  For example, if you have taught imaging science related courses and are
  willing to share your course webpage containing the syllabus and/or course
  material, etc., please let us know.

I am also very interested in hearing what ideas you have for promoting more interactions among the SIAG/IS members!

All the best, Naoki Saito <saito@math.ucdavis.edu>

3. 2016 SIAG Imaging Science Prize Information

The SIAG on Imaging Science Prize (SIAG/IS Prize), established in 2010, will be awarded to the authors of the best paper, as determined by the prize committee (to be selected soon), on mathematical and computational aspects of imaging. Imaging is broadly interpreted to include: image formation, inverse problems in imaging, image processing, image analysis, image interpretation and understanding, computer graphics, and visualization.

Candidate papers must be published in English, in a peer-reviewed journal, with a publication date in the period from January 1, 2011, through December 31, 2014.

The official call for nominations will be sent out in late spring/early summer. But it would be great if you start thinking now about great papers on imaging science that are eligible!

The award will be presented at the SIAM Conference on Imaging Science (IS16), to be held May 23-26, 2016, in Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA.

More details about the prize are available at http://www.siam.org/prizes/sponsored/siagis.php
