The matching of mentors and mentees will be done, at least in this pilot stage, by the officers of the SIAG GD activity group. We will try to respect your interests and wishes as best as possible, and ensure that the pair is not from the same institution and ideally not from the same country. It is also possible to contact us directly as a mentor-mentee pair, provided that the above requirements are met. Further, we would like to encourage senior members of the group to bring this opportunity to the attention of their students or junior colleagues who could benefit from it. SIAM Activity Group on Geometric Design

The SIAM Activity Group on Geometric Design (SIAG/GD) is concerned with the mathematical and computational issues that arise in generating and processing geometric information for various engineering applications, such as mechanical design, process planning, and manufacturing. The scope of the group's activities encompasses a wide spectrum of scientific, technological, and other skills, ranging from rigorous mathematics to the subjective aesthetics of shape.

The Mentoring Programme

The SIAM activity group on Geometric Design (GD) counts well over a hundred of researchers at various stages in their careers, spanning from industry to academia. Although the new Engage platform and the regular SIAM GD conference provide opportunities for networking, we would like to enhance this by introducing a mentoring programme for members of the GD activity group.

The aim of the programme is to connect experienced professionals (mentors) with more junior members (mentees) within the group. The idea is that once matched, mentors and mentees meet at least twice a year (in person or online) so that the mentee can reap the benefits of the experience of the mentor, discuss any work and/or career related issues, get advice on topics such as research, work-life balance, etc. Sky’s the limit. And mentors benefit too: learning how things work in different environments is often eye-opening and leads to improvement in one's own supervisory skills.

You can apply to get involved in the programme as a mentor or mentee as follows. Send an email to siamgdmentoring@gmail.com clearly stating whether you are applying as a potential mentor or mentee, including your contact email address and website (if you have one), affiliation and position in your organisation. Prospective mentees should briefly describe what they hope to gain from the programme, and prospective mentors need to specify how many mentees they are willing to accommodate.

Please note that non-student members in good standing can nominate up to two students per year for free membership in SIAM.

Successfully matched mentor-mentee pairs will be asked to meet at least twice a year and offer feedback on the programme once a year. To incentivise this, the activity group has limited funds available to support the programme, e.g. by providing small travel grants to facilitate mentor-mentee visits. We are happy to acknowledge the sponsorship of the programme by MTU Aero Engines.

Should you have any questions regarding the programme before deciding to join, please do not hesitate to contact us. We are looking forward to making this programme a success.

Prizes
Early Career Prize

The SIAM Activity Group on Geometric Design Early Career Prize (SIAG/GD Early Career Prize) is awarded every two years to an early career researcher who has made outstanding, influential, and potentially long-lasting contributions within five years of receiving the PhD or equivalent degree as of January 1 of the award year. See SIAG/GD Website for more information.

SIAM Fellow

The following SIAM fellows contributed to the field of Geometric Design in theory, applications or industry. See SIAM fellows program for more information on the SIAM Fellows Program which recognizes members of SIAM who have made outstanding contributions to their fields.
